This clip demonstrates the very real fear that Indians feel towards demons and what they do to avoid upsetting them and suffering under their power. A series of interviews with various individuals goes through how they feel about the myth of an eclipse occurring due to a demon swallowing the sun. Many people, despite not believing the myth, are still careful to follow customs set in place historically. -
3 Colors Medford Students in China Quarantine - Honor and Shame in Dealing with Illness.
The response of a guilt/innocence and honor/shame perspectives on a frustrating situation. A group of students from an Innocent/Guilt mentality are doing a cultural exchange program in China. They are stopped short and quarantined. This interview with them shows their annoyance with the strict measures and the desire for it to be “like home”. The Chinese official, when interviewed, talks about how it is a good experience for them because they will see how China values life, showing his desire to bring honor to his country, while the students are concerned with if the measures are “right”. -
Culture British Chinese eating eels - Differences in Manners
This short clip illustrates honor/shame in eating manners. The Chinese believe that it is honorable if their guests leave food over because that means there has been such an abundance to provide for their guests. British people believe that it is rude to leave food because that contributes to waste. In this humorous advertisement, we see this played out to the extreme. -

This clip shows tension between an American family as an Indian family watches. The mother is obviously trying to shame her son in front of the Indian family, despite being from an innocence/guilt background. They later remark on “feeling sorry” for the American family. -

A Pakistani man in a position of high power has his officers meet with an American ally. The American asks for alcohol, which is clearly culturally inappropriate but the officers are too afraid of shaming him to speak up so they look to their leader for help. He corrects the ally and the awkward situation is resolved. -

This can cause distress or confusion because of having one’s identity wrapped up in their background, but it can also bring joy because of finding common ground and “brotherhood” amongst the world. -

A young royal is speaking about the greatness of Siam to bring honor to his country. The teacher's son breaks in to make a joke and causes the young royal to feel shame and react accordingly. They then come to blows over their fathers.
